“Figes is the real deal” Jazzwise
“This is poised, distinctive music” Jazz UK less
Bristol-based altoist/flautist Kevin Figes steps forward with a double helping of his distinctively angular music, juxtaposing smooth wordless vocals with tricky time, careful scoring and some energetic beats.
Figes has been a central figure on the Bristol jazz scene for nearly two decades, and has shown dedication and focus in developing his own voice while working with the likes of Keith Tippett, Mike Outram and the recent Pee Wee Ellis/Fred Wesley Jazz Big Band. His style has developed into a maturity of tone and phrasing, employing repeating and varying phrases over carefully composed structures. The effect combines atmospheric ostinatos with rich texture and changing, flowing feels.
